MAKASSAR- Pemkot Makassar melirik tiga pulau yang berada di wilayah Kecamatan Ujungtanah, untuk didaftarkan ke United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) sebagai situs warisan dunia. Pemkot ingin mengikuti jejak Pemkab Luwu Timur yang sudah mengusulkan tiga danau.

Ketiga pulau dimaksud adalah Pulau Baranglompo, Pula Kodingareng Keke, dan Pulau Samalona. Pemandangan pulau yang masih asri dan terumbu karang yang masih terjaga keindahannya, menjadi alasan Pemkot Makassar mengajukan tiga pulau ini ke organisasi yang berada di bawah naungan Perserikatan Bangsa-bangsa tersebut.

Walikota Makassar, Ilham Arief Sirajuddin, mengatakan, karena kota tidak memiliki hutan dan kawasan khusus, maka dipilih pulau untuk diajukan ke UNESCO. Apalagi, kata dia, biota laut seperti terumbu karang memang cukup kaya di ketiga pulau tersebut.

"UNESCO kan lebih tertarik dengan sektor lingkungan. Nah, saya melihat keberadaan terumbu karang di sejumlah gugusan pulau-pulau cukup menarik untuk diusulkan sebagai situs warisan dunia," jelas Ilham, Jumat, 25 Desember.

Ilham pun berharap pihak UNESCO akan memberikan bantuan biaya dalam pemeliharaan pulau berikut terumbu karangnya. Khusus Pulau Baranglompo, katanya, sudah eksis sebagai pusat penelitian terumbu karang sehingga layak dipertahankan keberadaannya.

"Ini yang perlu kita pikirkan bersama, bagaimana agar terumbu karang yang ada di sekitar pulau tidak dihancurkan oknum tidak bertanggungjawab. Terutama para nelayan yang menangkap ikan dengan bom ikan," kata Ilham. (ram)
